SUNDARBANS, INDIA

Sundarbans

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the largest mangrove forests in the world. It lies on the delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers on the Bay of Bengal.

The Sundarbans is famous for its rich biodiversity, including 260 species of birds and threatened species like the Bengal Tiger, the estuarine crocodile, the Indian python and Olive Ridley Turtles. Spread across India and Bangladesh, the forests support one of the largest populations of Royal Bengal Tiger. About 350 of them are estimated to be there.

UNESCO calls the Sundarbans a significant example of on-going ecological processes like monsoon rains, flooding, delta formation, tidal influence and plant colonisation.
