At about 1-30 a.m. on 14-10-2009 Soma Das and two other reporters of the Bengali TV News Channel “24 Ghanta” were brutally heckled and manhandled physically by the Central Ministers Mamata Banerjee and Mukul Roy, Naxalite leaders Purnendu Bose and Dola Sen, so-called human rights activist Sujat Bhadra and others for covering news in front of the house of painter Subhaprasanna, painter, who is at present known as the modern Rasputin of West Bengal. Most abusive and filthy language was used against them. Mukul Roy even called the Chief Minister by father. Dola Sen threatened Soma Das with rape. Not only that. Mamata Banerjee has implicated all the three in a false case of “Attempt to murder”. Their cameras were broken to pieces and Press Identity Cards were snatched. All of them were forced to remain confined within the concerned police station for more four hours. The hoodlums of Mamata Banerjee and Maoists physically tortured them within the police station.
What is the fact behind the incident?
A get together in the name of “Bijoya Sammilini” was arranged at the residence of Subhaprasanna at Salt Lake City on 13-10-2009 from 6-00 p.m. Representatives of all the anti-CPI (M) forces including pseudo intellectuals were invited. Two top journalists - one from “Star Anand” and the other from the “Ananda Bazaar Patrika” were also invitees for their pro-Maoist and pro-Mamata role. Three Maoist linkmen were also present. The meeting was actually called for discussing how to free Chatradhar Mahato, the dreaded Maoist of Lalgarh now in jail, and how to organize the intellectuals in favour of the Maoists and their atrocities as was done during the Nandigram episode. The so-called function continued till 1-00 a.m. next day. A second meeting was reportedly scheduled to be held at CD Block between the top Maoist ideologue Kishanji and Mamata Banerjee in the presence of selected Maoist leaders, so-called intellectuals and a particular human rights activist.
As this conspiratorial game plan was exposed, Mamata Banerjee and her associates got furious and took recourse to assault and humiliation of the reporters of “24 Ghanta” out of frustration.
Both the reporters of “Star Anand” and the “Ananda Bazaar Patrika” which talk so much about the freedom of journalists not only maintained studied silence during the entire incident but also allowed the humiliation of the three reporters to take place without any protest.
It is high time the people of the state should stand united against these conspirators who are bent upon pushing the state and its people into fire.
