“There are two 'ten days that shook the world' in the history of the revolutionary movement of the last century: the days of the October Revolution, described in John Reed's book of that title, and the Twentieth Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (14-25 February 1956). Both divide it suddenly and irrevocably into a 'before' and 'after'. I cannot think of any comparable event in the history of any major ideological or political movement. To put it in the simplest terms, the October Revolution created a world communist movement, the Twentieth Congress destroyed it”.
THE Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) held its tenth Congress at Dhaka, capital city of the country, from October 11 to 13. On October 11 morning the CPB congress started with an open session in the Mahanagar Natya Manch open space, with a few thousand people with red flags and banner attending the function. Besides the fraternal delegates from foreign countries, leaders of various Left and democratic parties and prominent intellectuals also attended the open session. CPB president Manjurul Ahsan Khan presided over the open session where party general secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim, reception committee chairman Haider Akbar Khan Rano and fraternal party leaders spoke. CPB leaders urged upon their countryman to launch powerful and united struggles against imperialist globalisation and capitalist exploitation, and to uphold the principle and spirit of the great Liberation War. They asserted that only the Left and democratic forces can provide the only alternative, bringing about changes in the present exploitative socio-economic system that is responsible for the pathetic condition of the common man. They also warned the people against fundamentalist and communal forces who are out to disturb the secular tradition of Bangladesh.
THE Economist had come out with an exhaustive Special Report on global inequalities in its issue of October 12, 2012. It did not confine to reeling out facts about the status of current global inequalities. It compared them with the policies pursued by various countries. It urged the world leaders to come out with something that “promises both fairness and progress”. It ended by proposing its own set of prescription, 'true progressivism'. According to the Report, the crux of its 'true progressivism' is, putting an end to cronyism and investing in the young.
IN one of his last interviews to the international media, former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi warned that many in the armed opposition were fighters owing allegiance to Al Qaeda. But his assertions were dismissed as the ranting of a delusional man fighting with his back to the wall. Now the Obama administration itself has, however, confirmed that the killing of the US ambassador, Christopher Stevens and three other Americans was the handiwork of an Islamist militia—the Ansar al Sharia Brigade, known to have close links with the Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. The group, however, was quick to distance itself from the attack on the American consulate. The last time an American ambassador was killed on duty was in Kabul in 1979. The Americans should have known that they were playing with fire. One of the main fighting forces aligned with the West in the capital Tripoli was led by a former Al Qaeda fighter, Abdel Hakim Belhaj.
FED up with the corruption and anti-people policies of the Congress as well as the BJP, the people of Himachal Pradesh are in search of an alternative which is now before them for the first time in history. CPI(M) has good chances of winning in five seats – Shimla, Theog, Kusumpti, Joginder Nagar and Arki – of which, in the last two seats, it is putting up a good fight. While the CPI(M) is contesting 15 seats in the state, the Himachal Lok Morcha (HLM, Himachal People’s Front), which also includes the CPI and the Himachal Lokhit Party besides the CPI(M) is contesting all 68 seats of state assembly.
YES, the students of Hyderabad Central University (HCU) have given a very clear-cut mandate in the 2012-13 students union elections. They voiced their opposition to the Congress-led UPA-II government for its commercialisation and centralisation of education and against the BJP for its efforts to communalise the education. In this regard, SFI emerged winner of HCU elections bagging majority of the posts including president, vice president, general secretary, joint secretary apart from GSCASH representative. The candidates of ABVP won only sports secretary and cultural secretary posts. SFI bagged 28 councilors out of 44, which showed the faith of students in SFI.
